Dear Mr. Nalley, I am the man from Minnesota who called you a couple of times recently, in regard to our furnace problem. I want to personally thank you for your information and help. We did install a Trane S9V2 furnace and a new Trane AC unit, a week ago. It solved our air quality problem immediately! We were no longer light headed, could think clearly again, and had no more stomach upset. The heavy air was gone, and our house is back to normal, with very clean air! We had several heating companies check our Lennox G43 furnace beforehand. They said it could be a dirty "A" coil from the AC, or dirt on the heat exchangers. They recommended cleaning them, or having our ducts cleaned professionally. One company urged us to purchase a Lennox bypass air system, for $1700.00, to get more fresh air into our house. One person hinted it was all in our heads. But we knew better. We have lived in this house for 19 years and have made no recent changes. We use a Honeywell electronic air cleaner which does a great job of filtering dust in our house. One company installed a black box in our house to measure our air particulates, CO, CO2, etc, for one week. We had them take it out after only two days, because we had such trouble in our house breathing overnight, and had them send the results to us - it showed virtually no particulates, low CO and CO2, no red flags at all. Yet we were affected so much we left each day to get away from home and wanted to check into a hotel every night (but they charge too much). We finally called a different company - they again could not determine the problem, but we ordered the Trane from them, and had them install it within a few days. We "survived" sleeping at night, by turning down our thermostat so the furnace did not come on as often. It was cold, but we got through... Not once did we get the impression that the secondary heat exchanger was checked by anyone, although they said they did (how could they without tearing into it). We were very disappointed that no company could help us, so how could we get a replacement heat exchanger under warranty (our furnace is only 9 years old), we had to buy a new furnace... When the old furnace was removed, I examined it carefully myself. I found virtually no dust/particles on the top or bottom of the "A" coil. No dust/particles at all on either heat exchangers. Squeaky-clean! What I did find was some rust along a seam which connects the two left-most primary/secondary heat exchangers, although I could not see a crack. I also did a "sniff test" along the entire heat exchangers from above - I noticed a strong smell in the area of the rusted seam, but nowhere else. I had my wife come outside to also examine the old furnace. She has a better sense of smell, and she also noticed the bad smell. Not one person locally believed we had a real problem. But we both knew it, because some of our symptoms were the same, and we know our house. But what you told me also made sense, and we will always be grateful for the help you gave us, Mr. Nalley!
