After being out of town for several months, I returned on a Friday night to find my upstairs heat pump not working. Temperatures in the upstairs were in the 90s. Thankfully the downstairs unit was working. I called A+ at about 7:30 PM that evening and a service technician, Chris Thompson, arrived by 9:30 the following morning. Chris was extremely knowledgeable and quickly identified the problem as a coolant leak in the pipe joint connection to the reversing valve -- the pipe was cracked! Since my Ruud heat pumps are ONLY 2 YEARS OLD, the parts ( that they don't have!) are covered by warranty but the labor estimate to repair is $964! I'm not an HVAC expert, but I am a retired engineer and I know that pipes should not crack during normal operation. This is clearly a latent manufacturing defect and it's not fair that I bear the total cost of repair. The Manufacturer has some liability here. I plan to share this opinion verbally with A+ after the weekend to see if a reasonable resolution can be reached. $1K to fix a heat pump that's only 2 years old and the failure is a latent manufacturing defect is not reasonable.
