Jake Kring. 11-23-24. I arrived for a new customer no cool call. The homeowner explained that they have heat but did not have any cooling. He showed me the system and I found it to be a 13 year old R22 condenser with a downflow air handler. I inspected the system with the homeowner and we found the terminals to have blown out of the compressor. The system holds 14 pounds of R22 per the manufacturer data plate. I explained that the cost of replacing the compressor would be about half or more than half of the cost of replacing the system. I also explained that he would need to replace the R22 indoor unit and that he could not put a R410A system on a R22 indoor unit. We looked at the cost of the refrigerant and the cost of replacing the compressor without the cost of the compressor. He also wanted a ballpark quote on replacing the system. I will be looking for the compressor cost and will be following up with the homeowner Monday.
