Two years ago I had a new heat pump installed which required a new A coil in the attic furnace. Since then we have frequently smelled a faint odd irritating smell. We tried everything we could think of to locate and eliminate the smell to no avail. We have had six other visits by other repairmen and mentioned the smell to them. The last visit was by a new guy named Don. Don climbed into the attic and began taking the furnace door off to do his fall checkup and immediately said "You have a propane leak"! A moment later he said "And it's right here at this pipe joint". I happened to have all the necessary tools and pipe dope so we fixed it on the spot. Small job - BIG results. It has completely eliminated the odor that we have been chasing for two years...I'm thinking the propane being heavier than air found a way into the main part of the house and was diluted enough to not smell like most propane. Actually the smell was most predominant in an area just under the pipe that was leaking but after a three day trip upon return we smelled it throughout the house .. I'm sure that propane leaks do not get smaller so I'm thinking that Don not only saved our house from a future explosion but could have also saved our lives. We will be eternally grateful to Don for his attention to detail. Since the initial install we have had six maintenance visits by others as well as a recent internet installer visit that traversed that area with no mention of a leak. I myself was through the area several times and did not notice the leak. Thank you again Don, for being the vigilant person that you are.
