Evan called requesting the installation of an EV receptacle for his new electric vehicle. Upon arrival, I met with Evan and discussed his plans to install the EV receptacle on the front of his townhome, which was built in 1995. I performed a full evaluation of the electrical system and gathered the necessary information to complete an accurate load calculation on the home’s existing electrical service. The home is currently equipped with a 150-amp electrical service, and based on the load calculation results, adding an EV charging circuit would overload the service, creating a potential safety concern and not meeting recommended electrical standards. I explained my findings to Evan and recommended either installing a new dedicated EV circuit with a load management device to safely prevent overloading the electrical service or upgrading the home to a 200-amp electrical service to properly support the EV charger and future electrical demands.
