My problem: Heat pump gradually stopped cooling over a period af about 1 month. Service diagnosis: Very slow refrigerant leak. What was done: Refrigerant was added to immediatly restore normal operation along with a fluorecent dye to enable inspection and location of the leak at a later time. Education: Learned that as the AC cools the air it dehumidifies. (I knew this) What I didn't know was that the dehumidification is the reverse of evaporation. Evaporation cools the air. Dehumidification heats the air the same amount as the air was cooled on evaporation. So this heating effect fights the AC trying to cool until the humidity is removed. Then the temperature starts to drop. This effect is most noticeable after the AC has been off for a long time and the house is hot and humid.
