Customer stated that furnace was making a loud winding sound and shutting down during ignition cycle. I cycled system in heat and verified sound coming from worn inducer bearings. System gave fault code 42 "Inducer Motor Fault". Determined inducer motor assembly needs replaced. Inspected flu pitch, checked combustion air intake for possible blockages, and condensate trap. Likely caused by power surge that customer experienced the week prior. Priced inducer replacement and due to the age and condition of the system, discussed replace vs repair options with customer as well as surge protector options. Customer opted for repair. I replaced inducer motor assembly with OEM part, cycled system in heat, and found everything to be operating normally at this time. Customer is considering surge protector.
