Ultimately the washing machine was repaired. But it required multiple visits, misdiagnosis by an inexperienced lower level technician, parts delays, additional repair people (plumber, which should have been diagnosed initially) and missed appointments without communication. If it could go wrong it did. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be.
