On today’s visit the customer made me aware that there was a sulfur smell coming out of the hot water only. I was able to detect the presence of the smell and after speaking with the customer for a while I found that the home had not been occupied for a bit. The water heater is approximately three years old and looks to be in great working condition but sometimes at a factory setting of 120°F and sitting dormant it can produce a bacteria that causes this particular sulfur smell. According to A.O. Smith/state the best solution is to flush the water heater as well as install a mixing valve/tank booster allowing me to increase the temperature in the tank and regulate what enters the fixtures.Turning the temperature up would kill this form of bacteria and prevent it from continuing and the flesh would ensure that we got as much of the bacteria out as we could.
