The homeowner called requesting information on installing hookups for a portable generator. Upon arrival, I met with the homeowner and discussed what they were looking to have installed, and during my evaluation I determined that the exterior main shut off did not have any available breaker spaces to safely accommodate a generator connection. I explained the available options, which included installing a portable transfer switch with an exterior generator inlet, installing a secondary main breaker in the sub-panel with an interlock kit, or replacing the exterior main service with a panel that would accept additional breakers to meet safety and code requirements. No work was performed at this time, as the homeowner chose not to move forward with any of the solutions designed and discussed during today’s visit.
