Today I came to Slade’s Glengarry home because there has been an intermittent sewer smell for the past few years. As the home is up for sale, a solution must be found to stop the smell. Upon inspection of the 13 year old home I found the sewage ejection pit and pump are directly in front of the furnace. This is not an ideal location for a waste removal system. Slade has explained that another plumber replaced the sewage ejection pump was replaced 4-6 months ago and the smell remains. Upon inspection of the sewage ejection pit I found it is not sealed around the concrete floor and not sealed around the top access panel. My educated guess is that when the furnace runs for heating, cooling, or just fan function, the sewer gas can escape from pit and get sucked in to the return air of the furnace and distributed throughout the home.
