Work Performed: Responded to no cooling call. Client reported the outdoor unit had made a loud “jet engine” noise before shutting down and tripping the breaker. Results: Found 15A breaker tripped; replaced breaker. Inspected outdoor unit and found the condenser coil extremely clogged with debris. Cleaned the coil thoroughly with water before attempting to restart. Upon powering the unit, the breaker tripped immediately, and compressor made loud abnormal noise. Performed electrical diagnostics: tested all three compressor terminals to ground and found continuity to ground on each—compressor is shorted to ground. Tests were repeated using two separate ground points to confirm the diagnosis. Likely cause of failure is compressor overheating due to prolonged operation under very dirty coil conditions during recent extreme heat. Conclusion: The compressor has failed and will need to be replaced. Further repair or replacement options to be discussed with client.
