I performed a single heating maintenance on a 2022 heat pump system. I checked amps, capacitor, filter, electrical, cleanliness, heat kit, and safeties. I noticed that the evaporator coil is emitting an odor and becoming oxidized. The oxidation affects the efficiency of the system by limiting temperature transfer. The odor appears to be the earlier stages of dirty sox syndrome. Dirty Sox syndrome is where the evaporator coil forms odor emitting growth in between the fins of the evaporator coil. I recommend adding surge protection to the equipment. Surges can short out compressors, motors, thermostats, and control boards. When I arrived, I noticed error codes on the thermostat. I investigated and determined it was due to the wireless sensor needing batteries. I informed the customer, and they will replace the batteries.
