Called out today to investigate a garbage disposal that was tripping a breaker. Upon first inspection, I believed that possibly the disposal motor was starting to go bad, however, performing an amp draw, I got a sustained load of 4 amps, with an initial amp surge of 30 to 33 amps. Opening up the switch bank that housed the switch for the disposal, I could see that the switch was back-stabbed, and that the wires were starting to back out of the device. The disposal is terminated on a dual function 15 amps breaker, original to when the panel was installed in 2016. Customer told me that the breaker has been tripping for a few weeks, and appears to be happening more frequently. As these specialty breakers age and trip, they become more sensitive, creating more nuisance tripping. Surge protection can help to protect these sensitive breakers from surges created in and originating out of the home.
