Arrived on the job site. Customer stated that the circuit controlling the living room was not working properly, intermittently losing power, and his plug tester was showing a “hot-to-ground reverse” reading. Prior to my arrival, the customer had checked several outlets himself, except for two on the same circuit. I inspected the two outlets he had not checked and found that one of them had a bad connection. I replaced the outlet, which powers the ADT security system, and informed the customer that it carries a five-year warranty. I also notified the customer that I would be performing a full safety evaluation. Upon opening the panel, I found that the bar connecting the main breaker to the bus bar was severely damaged, showing heat damage and discoloration. I explained to the customer that this is not safe and that, given the age of the home (built in the 2000s), the electrical panel is within the typical 20–25 year replacement range.
