Arrived on the job site and spoke with the customer, who stated that Vivint had previously installed a doorbell and powered it from a 120-volt outlet. The customer noticed that whenever the doorbell power supply was plugged in, the front entry lights stopped working. Upon inspection, I found that the GFCI protecting the Vivint outlet was not functioning. I also discovered a space heater plugged into a living room outlet. After opening the outlet, I found melted wiring, and the breaker had not tripped. The circuit was wired with 14-gauge conductors on a 20-amp breaker. I performed a standard troubleshooting procedure, replaced and re-spliced the damaged wiring inside the junction box, and replaced the 20-amp GE breaker with a 15-amp GE breaker to match the wire size. This circuit also supplies the Vivint doorbell.
