During today’s furnace tune-up, a full visual inspection and operational check of all major heating components was completed. During the visual inspection of the heat exchanger, significant deterioration was observed. Two of the heat exchanger chambers have a rusted-through bottom seam, indicating advanced metal fatigue and corrosion. To further verify the condition, a combustion analysis was performed while the system was operating. The results confirmed abnormal readings consistent with a cracked heat exchanger, which allows combustion byproducts to escape from the sealed combustion chamber. A compromised heat exchanger is a serious safety concern because it can allow harmful gases, including carbon monoxide, to enter the living space. For this reason, continued operation of the furnace in its current condition is not recommended.
