Today I diagnosed that the second stage compressor that’s as rewired to operate as the first stage compressor has failed with a winding short to ground. The contactor that serves this compressor has also failed and is fused closed. This was the only operating compressor left to provide cooling. The blower wheel in this unit was also making a screaming noise when operating. Upon request from the client the compressor and blower motor were removed from operation. This unit is twinned with the unit next to it towards the west. I confirmed that the unit to the west returned to A/C mode when completed. Information was gathered and forwarded to provide options to move forward with replacement or repair (if feasible).
