Today’s service call was to troubleshoot a non-functioning dryer outlet. The customer recently purchased a new dryer that had been tested and verified to be operational at the store. Upon inspection, I discovered that the existing dryer outlet had a bonded neutral and ground connection. The cable feeding the outlet did not include a dedicated ground wire; instead, a jumper was installed between the neutral (white) terminal and the ground terminal. This wiring configuration is improper and unsafe. In a 4-prong dryer circuit, the neutral and ground must remain isolated. Bonding these conductors defeats the safety design of the system—causing potential breaker trips, improper equipment operation, and creating a shock hazard. The ground conductor is intended to carry fault current only, not return current. To correct the issue, I installed a new 30-amp circuit from the electrical panel to the dryer location.
