For this job, I came to diagnose a system that was frozen and not cooling. To begin I had to defrost all the ice on the system to be able to accurately get pressures and inspect the system. After that, I proceeded to check and notice that it was inconsistent showing a possible issue with the metering device or an airflow issue. After thoroughly inspecting the return, I noticed that in the actual return register itself tucked in a corner was an extra filter installed causing a double restriction. When removing the filter, the pressures were a bit better with the VSAt above freezing. Although this did resolve the issue, the pressures are still a bit funky and that’s due to the lack of proper supply and return ducts. I explained my findings to the customer and explained that if the issue continues, there would have to be a duct modification.
