The yellow jackets you were seeing in the upstairs area are most likely from a nest that may have gone unnoticed over the summer. due to the cold weather the yellow jackets outside of the queen will die off. as the home warms up with heating, some of the ones that have not been fully killed, may be re-awakened and venturing to a warmer area only to dehydrate and die, due to lack of a food source and water. This could be why you are seeing some in the home. Unfortunately, there is no way at this time of year to fully track a nest and you were just seeing a few of the ones that have not already been killed off by the cold. I started on the interior of the home treating baseboard level, cracks, and crevices throughout the basement with a liquid residual product for general pest control.
